Main Deal Websites
Since everybody likes to find a bargain once in a while and all ordinary people dream to live like kings and queens at least for one day, a deal-a-day type of websites become more and more popular and their range of products constantly diversifies offering almost everything from spa entrances and restaurant meals to software, jewelry and electronic appliances.
Woot is the original concept of “one day, one deal” type of websites. Created in 2004 by Matt Rutledge, it was nothing but a way of getting rid of unsold merchandise for the electronics wholesaler. Although at its beginnings the Texan company used to sell mainly tech-related products, they continue to hold one of the most visited deal websites, even after their purchase by Amazon. Their popularity is due to the wide range of products and to the variety of customer support options.
However, neither Woot, nor Amazon succeeded to enjoy the success Chicago based Groupon site launched in 2008. With discounts of 50 up to 90 %, they sell almost anything from massages, movie tickets, hotel stays, iPhone applications and even airplane piloting training. Although there are 500 such websites world wide and 100 within theUnited States, they seem to be threatened only by LivingSocial and this is mainly explained by their high international exposure. Their aggressive purchasing and geographic area expansion politics seem to ensure their future success as well as customers’ satisfaction.
But, if online buyers seem to be satisfied with the high discounts offered by both Groupon and LivingSocial, new competition has arrived on the market as in 2011, Facebook Deals and Google Offers appeared. Although their markets are still limited to Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco for Facebook and to New York City, San Francisco, Oakland and Portland for Google, they have infinite possibilities to reach customers and to become major forces within this industry.
